Detroit-Wayne Crisis Intervention Team Instructor Application

WHAT IS CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM (CIT)?

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is a community partnership of law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, individuals who live with mental illness and/or addiction disorders, their families and other advocates. It also promotes officer safety and the safety of the individual in crisis.

BECOME A MEMBER OF THE DETROIT-WAYNE CIT INSTRUCTOR TEAM

Becoming a Crisis Intervention Team instructor is an exciting opportunity and we are thrilled that you are interested. This role requires a serious commitment of time, energy and creativity. Before applying to become an instructor, we want to make sure that you fully understand what will be necessary for certification as well long term success as a CIT instructor. We are looking to select those individuals with the highest probability of success.

WHO SHOULD APPLY TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?

A CIT instructor will serve as a presenter, facilitator and, most importantly, an ambassador of the Detroit-Wayne CIT program. There are several key components that make an instructor successful, please review the requirements for eligibility.

Application requirements:

  • Completed the standard 40-hour CIT training

  • A current or former law enforcement officer who understands the basic principles and concepts of CIT.

  • Have at least 5-years of law enforcement experience.

  • Have general knowledge of the stigma associated with mental health and substance use issues, and will work to educate others on these issues.

  • Have successfully completed the 8 hour Mental Health First Aid course.

  • Have experience teaching groups of adults.

  • Understands best practices in adult learning.

  • Have experience facilitating groups.

In order to maintain good standing, instructors are required to:

  • Teach their first module within six months of becoming an instructor.

  • Participate in the facilitation of specific modules within the 40-hour block at least twice annually.

  • Pass Quality Evaluation visits and assessments.

  • Maintain satisfactory participant evaluation scores.

  • Engage in instructor/course refresher activities as instructed.
